It was one of the most exciting collaborations between DoubleMe and Rachel Ara, an artist‑in‑residence with the V&A Research Institute (VARI). Drawing on her research into the Museum’s collections, systems, and data, Ara created a site‑specific mixed‑reality artwork that explored the hidden stories behind the Santa Chiara Chapel in the Medieval and Renaissance Galleries.
We used the HoloPortal system at DoubleMe in South Korea to capture the nuns and optimised the 3D sequence for playback on the Microsoft HoloLens. Afterwards, we developed it into a mixed‑reality experience that allowed audiences to explore the Santa Chiara Chapel with holographic nuns walking through the space.
Below, just for the fun of it, I’ve included a 360-degree video taken while the team was testing out the Mixed Reality experience in the background.
