The Mobile World Congress 2018 was the busiest event I worked on, as DoubleMe collaborated with 5GIC at Surrey University to deliver the LoopSpace and Holoportal installations. The Holoportal system creates a real‑time holoportation call using the HoloLens, powered by four Xbox Kinect V2 sensors that capture a live 3D representation and stream it to the headset wearer.
During the event, I was responsible for ensuring stable connections between the laptops and Kinect units over the local network, calibrating the system using a set of four markers, and coordinating with the second stand to maintain a smooth HoloLens meetup experience. I also delivered live demonstrations of the LoopSpace installation to visitors.
Below is a BBC Click interview covering our process.
In preparation for the event, I optimised the 3D football holograms for the Microsoft HoloLens. This involved reducing the triangle count in Autodesk Maya and then setting up a GameObject prefab in Unity so it was ready for deployment in the LoopSpace app.
Below is a test recording captured with the HoloLens.
